MCCHS FRIDAY FOCUS
112th EDITION: April 19 2019
Pilgrims on the Way of Truth
A Message from Father Twenty...
“Rejoice and be glad!” (Matthew 5:12)
These are the words with which Jesus exhorts his disciples to be witnesses to the Good News, in spite of the suffering they will have to endure from a world opposed to their message.
These are the words Pope Francis used for the title of his recent Apostolic Exhortation “on the call to holiness in today’s world.”
These are also the words of our theme this year at Marian Central Catholic High School, which I announced at our first All School Mass back in August 2018.
These words resonate loudly in my heart this time of year for many reasons.
I rejoice and I am glad, because I am so blessed to have been assigned by Bishop Malloy to be a part of this wonderful community at Marian.
I rejoice and I am glad, because you all have so warmly welcomed me here.
I rejoice and I am glad, because I work with so many great people in the Marian staff and faculty.
I rejoice and I am glad, because I am inspired daily by the incredible students at Marian.
I rejoice and I am glad, because Marian is my new home.
Finally, I rejoice and I am glad, because I know that Jesus Christ is risen. He is truly risen! No sorrow, no suffering, no matter how painful and real, can ever take this amazing truth away from us.
I invite you to rejoice and be glad with me, because, as Pope Benedict XVI once said, “The Christian without joy is an oxymoron.”
May the Blessed Mother, cause of our joy and patroness of our beloved Marian Central, bring many graces to you and your families this season.
Happy Easter!
God bless,
Fr. 20

All Parents - We Need Your Feedback on the 1:1 Technology!
As we close Year One of our 1:1 Technology integration, we are gathering feedback from teachers, students, and parents on what worked and what needs improvement. Your opinion is SO IMPORTANT as we plan next year! Please take a few minutes to complete the Parent Survey linked below. If you could complete this survey by May 1st, we would really appreciate it!
SENIOR EXAM EXEMPTION
Seniors in good standing are afforded the opportunity to opt out of second semester final exams, given that they meet all of the criteria listed on the attached EXEMPTION APPLICATION (linked below).
This form must be completed in its entirety and returned to the school office by the end of the day on Friday, May 3rd 2019.
The classroom teacher reserves the right to rescind exemption approval if the student’s grade drops below 91% by the date of the final exam. The Principal and Assistant Principal also reserve the right to rescind exemption approval if the student accumulates additional disciplinary or attendance incidents that exclude him/her from the exemption policy outlined below by the date of the final exam.
THIS FORM MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ANY EXAM EXEMPTIONS.
Tuition and fees must be paid in full by April 15, 2019, according to official tuition payment schedule.
SENIOR EXAM EXEMPTION APPLICATION (includes all criteria!)
A few things to consider:
- We DO average 3rd and 4th quarter grades together! So - if a student had a rocky 3rd quarter, but brought up that grade, and that combined grade averages 91% (rounded) - then the exemption is still possible!
- We DO complete additional application reviews, if alerted by marking the "appeal" box. For example, some teachers may have a larger assignment or project due AFTER the exam application is due.
- We DO NOT accept appeals for excessive disciplinary infractions.
- We MATCH all absences with COLLEGE and MEDICAL notes received into the office.
- We MUST have a cut-off date for the appeal process: May 10th. That way, we can finalize those testing lists for our teachers - and all students know exactly what they need to prepare for!
- If in doubt - encourage your student to complete the application! Please know, however, even appealed applications may not result in approvals.
- Remind your student that this exemption program is a PRIVILEGE that must be EARNED.

College Counselor's Corner: JUNIORS...THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!
Dear Parents of our Junior Class:
Greetings from Guidance! As we approach the end of the school year, I’d like to offer a few updates and reminders about the college search process.
Individual junior meetings are complete! Over the past several months, I have met individually with every student in the junior class in order to learn about each of their unique college searches and introduce them to our new college exploration tool, SCOIR. These meetings have been informative, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with your daughters and sons. During these meetings, I’ve reminded each student that my entire job is connected to the college search, and I’m here to be a resource whenever they need throughout the next year. I encourage students and parents to meet with me often so we can navigate the intricacies of this year together.
While I won’t be at Marian during the summer months, I’m regularly available via E-mail. I encourage both students and parents to E-mail me as questions and concerns arise. I’m more than happy to schedule chats via phone, Skype, or FaceTime with both students and parents during the summer as needed.
Remember to use the summer months wisely! Even though classes aren’t in session, summer is an excellent time to visit college campuses to get an idea of how they make students and families feel. Summer is also the ideal time for students to finalize the list of colleges they plan to apply to in the fall. Remember, I’ll be able to view all students’ prospective college lists online in SCOIR. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions about current lists or to get more suggestions based on current “favorite” schools.
Here are a few important events and dates coming up in the Fall 2019 semester that I’d like to make you all aware of:
Senior College Application Night will be held on Tuesday August 20th 2019 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. This program will outline the logistics of applying to college and will include a brief Common Application tutorial and detailed instructions for using SCOIR throughout the college application process. Though attendance isn’t mandatory, all seniors are strongly encouraged to attend. Parents are encouraged to attend as well. Even though parents may not be new to the college application process, the Class of 2020 will be the first to use SCOIR to process and send all of their college application materials. We want to be sure everyone has the information they need to make college application season smooth and stress free!
Financial Aid Information Night will be held on Tuesday, September 24th 2019 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. This program will provide families with an understanding of how families’ financial need is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile and how colleges use that information to award need-based financial aid. This year’s presenter will be Susan Teerink, the Associate Vice Provost for Financial Aid and Enrollment Services at Marquette University. This program is open to students and parents from all grade levels, however junior and senior families are strongly encouraged to attend.
Next year will be a whirlwind for you all, and especially for your daughters and sons. Please know that Mrs. Hilton, Mr. Kruse, Mrs. Diamond, and I are all here to help in any way that we can!
Qapla’!
